The Tokyo Olympics that were scheduled for this summer have been put off until next year
Earlier today, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) announced the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics. The Olympic Games are reportedly being pushed back to 2021. In a statement released by the IOC, the organization said, “…the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community.”
The decision was made in response to the growing Coronavirus Pandemic that is sweeping the globe. As of today, Japan has at least 1140 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 42 deaths. In 2019, Japan reported a national population of 126.8 Million people.
The Olympic Torch relay was also postponed today. The relay is scheduled to take place in 2021. The International Olympic Committee said that the torch will remain in Japan for the time being.
