The New York Giants are one of two NFL franchises in New York. They are one of the oldest teams in the NFL and are one of only six teams in NFL history with four or more Super Bowl titles. The team enjoyed tremendous success in the early 2000s through 2011 thanks to future Hall of Fame quarterback Eli Manning who led them to two Super Bowl victories. However, the Giants have been struggling in recent years due in part to an aging Manning.
Learn more about the New York Giants, including whether experts are giving the New York Giants odds of making the Super Bowl in the next couple of years, and how New York Giants betting is coming soon to NY online sportsbooks.
One of the Oldest Teams in the NFL
The New York Giants joined the National Football League in 1925, just four years after the formation of the league. Amazingly, the team was able to win the NFL Championship in just their third year of existence in 1927. They also won titles in 1934, 1938, and 1956.
After the league merger in 1970, the team went over a decade without a winning season or a playoff appearance. The team enjoyed a resurgence in the 1980s under head coach Bill Parcells and went on to win Super Bowl XXI against the Denver Broncos for their first Super Bowl title. Parcell led the team to their second title in 1990 by beating the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV.
The team did not win the Super Bowl again until 2007 when they beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII with Eli Manning taking Super Bowl MVP. Manning led the team to the title again in 2011 when the Giants once again beat the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.
Since winning Super Bowl XLVI, the Giants have only had one winning season and have missed the playoffs six of the last seven years. Many feel that an aging Eli Manning is part of the reason for the decline and many speculate that his time in New York is limited.
Outlook for the Giants in 2019 and Beyond
The Giants are clearly in rebuilding mode, and many wonder how long that the team will go with Eli Manning at QB. Many draft experts feel that the team is likely to draft a QB. If so, Manning’s days may be numbered. They have also been cleaning house in the offseason, getting rid of troublesome wide receiver Odell Beckham and other players.
Frankly, there aren’t enough pieces to this team presently to warrant a winning season, much less a playoff run. While some experts are putting them at 7-9 for 2019, that seems to be a favorable outlook. We see the team more like 5-11 or 6-10 unless Manning can turn back the clock and pull something out this team we haven’t seen in a few years.
