Successful Team That’s Yet to Win a Major Title
The New York Red Bulls are one of the founding teams of Major League Soccer, initially starting out as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. From 1998 to 2005, they were just known as the MetroStars, and in 2006, the team was bought out by Red Bull GmbH and renamed the New York Red Bulls.
Over the years, the team has been consistent playoff contenders, only missing the playoffs four times in their existence. They finished first in the Eastern Conference four of the last six years and won the Supporters’ Shield in 2013, 2015, and 2018.
Unfortunately, the team has yet to play in the MLS Cup finals despite their incredible streak of making the playoffs. They have had a bit more success in the U.S. Open Cup, making the finals twice, yet failing to win. They also made the Semi-finals of the Champions League in 2018.
Outlook for 2019 and Beyond
The Red Bulls had a record-setting campaign in 2018, and most of their players returned in 2019. However, they did lose Midfielder Tyler Adams, and some feel that he leaves a void that will significantly reduce the team’s aggressiveness.
The other question is whether Striker Bradley Wright-Phillips can continue to play at top form. He’s 34 now, and some wonder if he will start slowing down soon. If he doesn’t the team may still be in good shape for a playoff run.
The question now is whether the team can get over the hurdles that seem to trip them up in the playoffs. We give the New York Red Bulls odds of making the playoffs yet again in 2019, but unless they do something to improve their postseason play, they likely will have an early exit yet again.
