Brooklyn is on the road and favored by four points over Charlotte
The Brooklyn Nets will officially be without the services of Kyrie Irving for the remainder of this season. Two days ago, it was announced that Irving will undergo surgery on his shoulder, effectively ending his 2019-2020 campaign. This is a huge blow to Brooklyn’s hopes for a deep run in the playoffs, but the Nets are used to playing without Kyrie. The six time all-star has only been active in 20 games this season for the Nets. Regardless, Brooklyn will have to get used to playing without Irving for the rest of the year. Thankfully, the Hornets are a bad team and can serve as a good jumping off point for the new-look Nets.
As it stands, the Nets lead the season series against Charlotte two games to one. Brooklyn won the first two match-ups, but the Hornets surprised the Nets and claimed a victory in the last game by a final score of 113-108. Regardless of who the winner has been, these games have been close. The winning team only has an average margin of victory of 7.3 points per game. In the end this game will be a tight contest, but I think the winning team will have no issue covering the four point spread.
The Hornets are hot right now. They are currently riding a three game win streak that started before the NBA All-Star break. However, the three teams they have beaten have been unimpressive this season and look like some of the worst franchises in the NBA right now. The Timberwolves, Pistons, and Bulls have a combined record of 54-114 this season. The Hornets haven’t been much better though. Prior to this win streak, Charlotte was just 16-36 on the year. However, the small win streak lifts them to a 19-36 record, which places them 10th in the Eastern Conference. Regardless, a run at the postseason seems unlikely, since they are four and half games behind the Orlando Magic. It is not impossible that Charlotte can make the playoffs, but I don’t think they have enough firepower to catch up with the Magic when all is said and done.
Meanwhile, the Nets came so close to beating the Philadelphia 76ers in their last game. They were able to force overtime in their game against Philly, but they ended up falling to the 76ers by a final score of 112-104. That loss gave the 76ers the season series victory three games to one. Brooklyn will be looking to bounce back tonight though as they go to North Carolina to take on a bottom-feeder team in the Hornets.
They way I look at it, I think the Nets are an average NBA team this season. They beat the bad teams in the NBA and often lose to the good teams they play, with the occasional surprise victory like the one they had against the streaking Raptors before the all-star break. I think the Hornets are one of the bad teams that Brooklyn will have no problem taking care of. I like the Nets to win this game and cover the spread.
