The Mets will hold their first workouts today while players begin to report to Spring Training for the Yankees.
The long wait is finally over. Major League Baseball is back! This tumultuous off-season featured multiple managers being hired and fired, huge free agent acquisitions by several teams, and a massive cheating scandal that tainted the 2017 World Series. However, we can finally put that all behind us and begin to focus on the 2020 MLB season.
Things picked up a few days ago for the New York Mets. Pitchers and Catchers first reported to Port St. Lucie on Monday. Today, the Metropolitans will be holding their first workouts of the season. The entire team is expected to report to Training Camp on Saturday, and the first full-team workout will be held on Monday, February 17th.
The biggest story for the Mets this off-season was the hiring and eventual departure of Manager Carlos Beltran. The former all-star was hired by the Mets to replace Mickey Callaway as the team’s skipper back in November. However, before he even managed a single game, Beltran and New York ended their relationship after he was singled out by name in the Houston Astros’ sign stealing scandal. New York later went on to hire quality control coach Luis Rojas to be the team’s new Manager on January 24th.
It hasn’t all been bad for the Mets this off-season though. New York did manage to retain star Pitcher Jacob deGrom. The two-time Cy Young winner signed a five-year contract extension with the Mets worth $137.5 million. New York will be looking to improve on their 86-76 record from last season. The Mets have failed to make it back to the postseason since losing in the 2016 NL Wild Card game.
Spring Training also begins today for the New York Yankees. Pitchers and Catchers reported to Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida today. Among the players was prized free agent acquisition Gerrit Cole. The three-time all-star signed a nine-year contract with the Bronx Bombers back in December worth $324 million. New York is hoping that the Cole signing will be the boost they need to push them over the top and get them back to the World Series. The 2010s signified only the second time in franchise history that the Yankees failed to make a World Series appearance over the span of a decade with the only other time coming in the 1910s.
Pitchers and Catchers reported to Tampa today for the Yanks, and they will hold their first workouts of the season tomorrow on February 13th. The Yankees’ position players will report to Tampa on Monday the 17th. The first full-team workouts will take place the following day on February 18th. The Yankees’ first spring Training game will be against the Toronto Blue Jays on February 22nd at 1:05 PM EST.
Opening Day for both the Mets and the Yankees will take place on March 26th. The Yanks will face the Baltimore Orioles on the road. As for the Mets, their first game of the regular season will be at home against the Nationals.
