Isles will play all 2020 home playoff games and 2020-2021 regular season home games at Nassau Coliseum
Earlier today, it was announced that the New York Islanders will play all potential 2020 home playoff games and all regular season home games for the 2020-2021 season at Nassau Coliseum. The announcement was made by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo prior to the start of the Isles’ game against the Boston Bruins on Saturday.
Cuomo said, “I think when they moved to play [at Barclays Center] in Brooklyn, I felt the air come out of the balloon. It was not right… This is not what it is supposed to be. … The Islanders should be on Long Island. It was complicated more than anything because you had to deal with the NHL issues at this facility and we had to get them done and get them down quickly.”
The Islanders began playing at the Barclays Center at the start of the 2014-2015 NHL season. However, the Isles began to split playing time of their home games between the Barclays Center and Nassau Coliseum last year. Now, New York will play all remaining home playoff games at Nassau Coliseum as well as all regular season home games starting next year. The Islanders will eventually move to their new permanent home at Belmont Park when the construction of their new arena is expected to be done at the start of the 2021-2022 NHL season.
The Islanders came into Saturday with a 13-7-2 record at Nassau Coliseum this season. They have also managed to post a 7-0-3 record at the Barclays Center.
