What Are the NY Knicks Odds to Win This Season
While many Knicks fans are still extremely disappointed that the team failed to land both Zion Williamson and Kevin Durant over the summer, the selection of Duke University standout RJ Barrett with the third-overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft should not be overlooked. Barrett was exceptional in 38 games for the Blue Devils last season, averaging 22.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game.
The young duo of C Mitchell Robinson and Barrett should provide the Knicks with plenty to get excited about moving forward, especially if PG Dennis Smith Jr. continues to develop after he was acquired from the Dallas Mavericks in the Kristaps Porzingis trade at the beginning of February. Smith Jr. was the ninth-overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft and despite showing flashes of brilliance in his brief stint with the Mavs, he still has a lot of work to do if he hopes to live up to his initial hype after being drafted.
The biggest question mark surrounding the addition of Barrett appears to be how quickly the rookie can make an impact at the NBA level. He is currently listed behind only Zion Williamson and Ja Morant in terms of the Rookie of the Year Award race with the betting market currently pricing him at +450 to win. Oddsmakers currently have a wide variety of other Knicks prop bets available as well, including a very interesting figure of 26.5 for the over/under line for Knicks wins during the 2019 regular season.
How Will R.J. Barrett Affect the NY Knicks Odds?
According to many scouting reports, Barrett’s ability to be a prolific offensive player at the NCAA-level should almost immediately translate to success in the NBA, as he is undoubtedly a volume scorer that should get a ton of usage on a rebuilding Knicks squad. His extended jump-shot range and tenacity driving to the basket will certainly cause problems for opposing defenses.
Barrett also appears to have no shortage of confidence, as he has already announced that he hopes to take down the Rookie of the Year Award in 2019-20. However, the Knicks still appear to be at least a couple of years away from becoming serious contenders in the Atlantic Division, as betting markets have them listed at +20000 to win the Atlantic in 2019-20. They are also currently -1900 to miss the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year after their run to the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 2012-13.
All things considered, the New York Knicks betting markets will be extremely interesting to track this season as the team attempts to finally start moving in the right direction. Although RJ Barrett should certainly help accelerate an eventual turnaround, it will likely take a couple seasons for this young core of talent to come together and become a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference.
